Description
Dabove, Juan Pablo. Nightmares of the Lettered City; Banditry and Literature in Latin America 1816-1929. Pittsburgh: U of Pittsburgh P, 2007. 381 pp. ISBN 978-0-8229-4331-0; 978-08229-5956-4 (paper) Although Dabove does not set out to model his study on Josefina Ludmer's El cuerpo del delito; un manual (1999), a fine work that demonstrates the evolution in Argentina of the concept of crime in accordance with the development of the rinciples of the liberal state (her subtitle has ah ironic value that is parodic of legal treatises and the like), Nightmares of the Lettered City is in the same vein: indeed, its title evokes the liberal project of the liberl state and its self-assign superioity because it has a privileged aceess to the written codes of the social establishment. Dabove's purview is the period that runs from 1816, the period of the early years of Independence (the year is that of the first publication of the Mexican Fernandez de Lizardi's El periquillo sarniento) to 1929, the beginning of the collapse of the old liberal state with the Great Depression) the year is that of the publicaiton of the Venezuelan Gallegos's Dona Barbara).
