After all, the reason I had given for stepping outside was that I wanted a smoke. Even though nobody was fooled, I couldn't admit that the real reason was to get away, however briefly, from the sight of my father lying on the sofa trying to pretend nothing was wrong, to escape the labored sound of his breathing, the little pained grunts that occasionally escaped him despite his determination to avoid calling attention to himself.
